Sverdlovsk Region
Established on January 17, 1934. Administrative center of the region is Ekaterinburg. Time difference: Moscow (+2 hours), London (+5 hours), New York (+10 hours). Geography Sverdlovsk region occupies the central part of the Urals Federal district. It borders with Perm region in the west, the Komi Republic and Hanty-Mansi autonomous region in the north, Tyumen region in the east and Kurgan, Chelyabinsk region and Bashkortostan in the south. The overall area of the region totals 194.3 thous.km2 (17th in Russia). Large regional cities are Ekaterinburg, Nizhniy Tagil, Kamensk-Uralskiy, Pervouralsk, Serov. Population Sverdlovsk region is a highly urbanized region, urban population reaching 83%. It is the 5th region in Russia in terms of population (according to the evaluations as of the January 01, 2009 - 4 394.6 thous. people, as of 01.01.2008 - 4 395.6 thous., as of 01.01.2007 - 4 399.7 thous., as of 01.01.2006 - 4 409.7 thous.). Population density is 22.6 persons per km², which is thrice above the Russian average. The national majority of population in the region is Russians (89.2%), Tatars (3.8%), Ukrainians (1.2%), Bashkirs (0.8%) and other nationalities (5.0%). Economy The regional economy is based on mining and metallurgy industries. In its industrial complex ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy (31% and 19% of overall production volume correspondingly), uranium enrichment, iron-ore dressing as well as machine-building predominate. Military Industrial Complex (tank and ammo production) as well as heavy specialized machinery (equipment for mining, energy and chemical industry) predominate in machine-building. Large regional enterprises include Metallurgy Plant in Nizhniy Tagil, Mining and Concentration Company in Kachkanar, Uralmash, Bogoslov and Urals Aluminum Plants, Metallurgy Plant in Kamensk-Uralskiy, Porcelain Factory in Bogdanovich, Uralvagonzavod. Economic benefits Sverdlovsk region is abundant in mineral resources (gold, platinum, fossils, bauxite, iron ore, nickel, chrome, manganese and copper). Sverdlovsk is the second region in Russia in terms of industrial production volume. The region also plays an important part in Russian transport system. There are many railroad, automobile and air routes of all-Russian importance in the region, including trans-Siberian railway. Railroad and automotive network density is above the Russian average. Airport "Koltsovo" in Ekaterinburg is an important transfer hub which services domestic and international passenger and cargo routes linking European and Asian parts of Russia.
Chelyabinsk region
Established on January 17, 1934. Administrative center of the region is Chelyabinsk. Time difference: Moscow (+2 hours), London (+5 hours), New York (+10 hours). Geography Chelyabinsk region occupies the southern part of the Urals federal district. It borders with Sverdlovsk region in the north, Kurgan region in the east, Orenburg region in the south, Bashkortostan in the west and Kazakhstan in the south-east. The overall area of the region is 88.5 thous. km2 (5th among 8 Urals regions and 39th among Russian regions). From north to south its length totals 490 km, from west to east totals 400 km. Overall border length reaches 2 750 km. Large regional cities are Chelyabinsk, Magnitogorsk, Zlatoust, Miass, Kyshtym. Population Chelyabinsk region is the 2nd in the Urals federal district in terms of urbanization, urban population reaching 81.4%. In terms of population the region is the 9th in Russia (around 3.6 mln.). Population density reaches 39.6 persons per km2, which is highly above the Russian average. The national majority of population in the region is Russians (82.3%), Tatars (5.7%), Bashkirs (4.6%), Ukrainians (2.1%), and other nationalities (5.3%). Economy Machine-building, metal work, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy produce 3/6 of overall industrial production in Chelyabinsk region. The region also has own chemical, textile and food industry. Besides, regional plants produce electronic engineering and metering equipment. Economic advantages Chelyabinsk region is abundant in mineral resources (iron, copper and nickel ores, magnesium and cement, brown coal). Ferrous metallurgy in the region, unsurpassed by scale, is represented by one of the largest metallurgy plants (Metallurgy Plant in Magnitogorsk), semi-integrated plants, ferroalloy and pipe plants. Non-ferrous metallurgy comprises copper, zink and nickel production. Metallurgy is accompanied by magnesium firebrick production. Machine-building has its own metallurgy base and produces tractors, tracks, trams, technological equipment, rocket space equipment, electric produce. Energy base of the region consists of brown coal mining and several high-power stations.
Perm region
Established on December 01, 2005 as a result of merger of Perm region and Komi-Permyak autonomous regions in compliance with referendum results (held on December 07, 2003). Administrative center of the region is Perm. Time difference: Moscow (+2 hours), London (+5 hours), New York (+10 hours). Geography Perm region is a part of the Volga federal district. It borders with Komi Republic, Kirov region, Udmurtia, Bashkortostan, Sverdlovsk region. From north to south its lengths reaches 645 km, from west to east 417.5 km. Largest regional cities are Perm, Kungur, Berezniki, Solikamsk, Gubakha. Population According to evaluations, as of January 01, 2009 the population of the region was 2.7 mln. people. The national majority of population in the region is Russians (85.2%), Komi-Permyaks (5.7%), Tatars (4.9%), Bashkirs (1.5%), Ukrainians (0.9%), and other nationalities (1.8%). Economy The regional economy is based on highly developed industrial complex which includes oil, chemical and petrochemical industries, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, machine-building, wood and food industry. Largest regional enterprises include ООО "Lukoil Perm", ООО "Lukoil Permnefteorgsintez', ОАО "Uralkaliy", ОАО "Silvinit", ОАО "Azot", ZАО "SIBUR-Chimprom", ОАО "Chusovskoy Metallurgy Plant", ОАО "Gubakhinskiy koks", ОАО "Perm Non-ferrous Metals", ОАО "Motovilikhinskye Zavody". Economic advantages Perm region is abundant in various mineral resources which is explained by complex relief of mountain and plato parts of the region. The region produces oil, gas, coal, mineral salts, gold, diamonds, chromite ore, fossils, gem, ornamental and facing stones as well as construction materials. The leading branch of chemical industry is mineral salt production (100% of Russian mineral salts production resides in the region). There is the largest deposit of potash salt in the region. Companies, head-quartered in Perm region (ОАО "Uralkaliy" and ОАО "Silvinit"), are one of the largest producers and exporters of potash manure. Ferrous metallurgy is represented by integrated and semi-integrated works. An important role in regional machine-building plays military production. The plants produce rocket and aircraft engines, oil and mine equipment, petroleum saws, communication equipment, cables, equipment for railroad companies, etc. Timber processing complex utilizes rich wood resources of the region. The wood processing enterprises are mainly in the northern part of the region. Food industry consists of meat-packing and milk plants, butterine and flour factories as well as confectionaries.
